The town mouse and city mouse
Overview
This design is for a page from a children's story book, particularly for the story The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse. We were tasked with creating a page with interesting visual storytelling that was child-friendly, as well as placing a small bit of the type for the scene we illustrated into a placement that was legible. It was challenging to create a visual story for children that was different from the book I had picked and still clear to understand the situation. The type was also a challenge as it had to be easily readable but also interesting for a child to read.
- This illustrations uses simplified, rounded shapes and minimal details to maintain a child-friendly, approachable visual style while also creating a highly tense narrative moment between a small mouse and large dog which is emphasized by the scale contrast of the two characters.
- The warm, cohesive color palette evokes an indoor and cozy setting which incorporates subtle background patterning to add visual interest without distracting from the main characters and keeping visual harmony.
- The composition and typography helps to lead the viewer through the scene, with the main portion of text at the top with italic or bold emphasis on important phrases, the character interaction mid-frame, and the concluding text at the bottom with the bold styling on the "house dog" character to enhance storytelling rhythm.
- The use of expressive character poses and facial features to help convey emotion and narrative without complex detail to the characters, though each still has personality from the mix of expression and simple details to character design; such as the red dog collar and the mouse's hat and bell necklace.
