Alice in wonderland Animation

Laptop screen showing an animated title card for 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'.

Overview

This is a short fairytale animation for a class assigned project. We were tasked with creating the visual animation from an older fairytale story, using our own style and storytelling techniques. The animation was to be fairly short, spanning approximately thirty seconds, but didn't require exact time usage. The fairytale story I chose was Alice in Wonderland

Animation in Context

Character Design

  • Each character is created from simple shapes and limited limb movement to focus more on the aspects of the story rather than character detail, while each is still easily recognizable though still has their own quirk to feel more realistic.
  • The stylization is meant to make the characters more child-friendly as they are round and friendly with bold color palettes.

Falling Scene

  • Though the animation is short, I wanted to create a feeling of being shocked and helpless at the beginning to pull the viewer into the story and create more interest.
  • The scene helps to introduce the problem as well as situate who the main character is from the start.
  • To create more visual depth and the feeling of falling, the background not only gets darker but also has small shifts and movement. Alice also moves to emphasis this falling.

Drinking Potion Scene

  • There is lots of little movement in this scene to make it more believable, using squash and stretch as well to push this more complicated movement than in previous scenes.
  • The scene is packed with interesting storytelling through visual aspects and sound, which are amplified by the lack of type for storytelling.
  • The background helps add to the scene while not taking away from the characters or main movements, it creates the space and shows the problems at hand to remind the viewer of the situation.
